Fire Brigade Keys (FB Key Series)

Fire Brigade (FB) keys and locks are used by emergency services, councils and facilities teams throughout the UK.
They are most commonly associated with areas covered by the London Fire Brigade but are widely used nationwide.

Fire Brigade keys are typically fitted to locations where emergency services may require rapid access, including:

• Gates and external access points
• Gas and electrical cupboards
• Dry risers and service risers
• Plant rooms and communal areas

There is no single standard Fire Brigade key.
The term “Fire Brigade key” refers to a range of different keys within the FB series, each designed for a specific type of lock or application.

Drop Key

The Fire Brigade drop key is commonly used on automated gates and front entrance doors to allow emergency services access in the event of an emergency.
It is also sometimes used as an override key on lifts and elevators.

Important: In recent years, several new variations of the Fire Brigade drop key have been introduced.

Fire Brigade Key Types Available

Mortice Locks

• FB1 – Available in standard or extra-long
• FB2 – Available in standard or extra-long

Rim / Slam Locks

• FB4 – Available in standard or extra-long

Padlocks

• FB – Small silver Fire Brigade padlock (sometimes referred to as an FB1 or “W” key)
• FB11 – Larger silver Fire Brigade padlock
• FB14 – Larger yellow Fire Brigade padlock

Drop Key

• Typically used for emergency access to blocks of flats or to access lifts in the event of a fire.

How Do I Identify Which Fire Brigade Key I Need?

Mortice Locks
Open the door and check the faceplate. It will usually be marked FB1 or FB2
(occasionally shown as LFB1 or LFB2).

Rim (Surface) Locks
The key code is generally stamped on the side of the lock body.

Padlocks
Fire Brigade padlocks are marked FB, 11 or 14, which corresponds to the required key.
They can also be identified by size and colour:

• FB – Small silver Fire Brigade padlock
• FB11 – Larger silver Fire Brigade padlock
• FB14 – Larger yellow Fire Brigade padlock
